Labour Ministry, police investigating fatality at landfill in Oro-Medonte

The Ministry of Labour has begun an investigation after a deadly incident at a landfill on Old Barrie Road in Oro-Medonte Township.

Fire Chief Rory Payment confirmed in an email to Barrie 360 that firefighters responded around 8:30 Monday morning to a report of a worker struck by a commercial vehicle.

A female was found deceased.

He added that the Ontario Provincial Police are also assisting with the investigation.

The County of Simcoe has confirmed the incident involved county employees.

"Our thoughts are with family, friends, and colleagues affected by this tragic loss," the county said in a statement. "Out of respect for the family's privacy and the ongoing investigation, we are unable to share further information."

The statement added the county was committed to supporting its staff and ensuring they have all the necessary resources.

"Flags are lowered to half-mast at the County Administration Centre in memory of our lost colleague," the county said.

The landfill is closed because of the investigation.
