It's not like there hasn't been plenty of warning.
Barrie residents are being reminded that changes to curbside waste collection start Wednesday, May 1, 2024, when Emterra Environmental begins as the city's new waste collection contractor for organics, garbage and yard waste collection.
Here is the checklist you need to have:
- Check your collection schedule. Your collection day and week for garbage may change. Visit barrie.ca/CollectionSchedule or call 705-726-4242. Be sure to place materials curbside by 7 a.m. The pickup times you’re used to may change with the new collection routes.
- Place pet waste in your organics (green bin). This includes dog and cat waste, plant-based kitty litter and bedding for small animals. Pet waste must be placed in certified compostable bags.
- Place yard waste curbside Monday by 7 a.m. on your yard waste collection week (opposite of your garbage week). It will be collected sometime before end of day Friday.
Remember, there will be no shifts to the collection schedule due to holidays (except Christmas Day and New Year’s Day). Curbside collection will occur on all other holidays, including Victoria Day (Monday, May 20) and there will be no shift in the collection schedule that week.
With the schedule changes, some properties will miss a garbage and/or an organics collection as part of the transition. The city has sent letters to affected properties with details on a special collection.
As part of a provincial regulation affecting all Ontario municipalities, starting in May, a not-for-profit organization called Circular Materials will be responsible for residential recycling collection in Barrie. Circular Materials, on behalf of producers of packaging material, will manage a separate contract with Emterra Environmental for residential recycling services. Residential recycling will still be collected weekly on the same day as organics and garbage, and the materials accepted will stay the same.
The City encourages residents and businesses to visit barrie.ca/CurbsideCollection to learn more.
SOME HIGHLIGHTS:
WASTE PROGRAM CHANGES
- the city will have a new waste collection schedule which will affect about 10,000 properties.
PET WASTE ACCEPTED IN GREEN BIN
- the city says 18 per cent of curbside garbage is pet waste, so this change will be impactful to the landfill, and if everyone participates and uses the green bin, potentially 3,600 tonnes will diverted at the landfill each year.
YARD WASTE SET TO THE CURB ON MONDAY OF THE COLLECTION WEEK, BI-WEEKLY COLLECTION
- the city says with this new model that requires material out on Monday across Barrie, this will allow the contractor to allocate resources to be better prepared for the week ahead and to understand the material out there.
- as a comparison, the city says there might be 25 tonnes of leaves to collect in the summer, and in the fall that can rise to as much as 150 tonnes
