The South Innisfil Arena & Community Centre (Lefroy Arena) in Innisfil will be renamed in honour of Constable Morgan Russell who, along with Constable Devin Northrup, lost his life in the line of duty last fall.
Mayor Lynn Dollin stated, "We are all still grieving the loss of two valued members of our police service, and it's only fitting to honour Constable Russell this way, as he grew up playing hockey in this arena."
The Town of Bradford West Gwillimbury is working with the family of Constable Devon Northrup to rename a municipal asset in his honour.
Mayor Dollin added, "The loss of Constables Russell and Northrup has left a deep wound in our community, and we hope that by renaming this arena in memory of Constable Russell, we can preserve his legacy and show appreciation for the sacrifices he made while serving the community."
The renaming ceremony will coincide with the Lefroy Minor Hockey Association's annual "Fill the Barn" event. The public is welcome to attend the event and is encouraged to bring a donation for the Innisfil Food Bank.
The ceremony will be held on February 12 at 6 p.m. and will be attended by Russell's family, council members, police officials, and other dignitaries.
