Employees foil attempt theft of groceries in Gravenhurst

A man is facing a number of charges, according to Ontario Provincial Police, after an attempt theft at a grocery store on First Street North in Gravenhurst.

Around 10:20 on Wednesday night, police say after workers had closed the store for the day, a man slipped into the building through an employee door and attempted to steal a quantity of consumable goods.

"Employees responded to the intruder, who assaulted an employee while attempting to follow through with the theft," police said in a news release.

Officers arrived on scene and took a 52-year old Gravenhurst man into custody.

He has been charged with the following:

  • Break and Enter CC 348(1)(b)
  • Assault Cause Bodily Harm CC 267(c)
  • Assault with a Weapon CC 267(a)
  • Robbery with Violence CC 343(a)
  • Possession of a Weapon for a Dangerous Purpose CC 88
  • Obstruct Person in the Lawful Execution of a Process CC 129(c)
  • Fail to Comply with Probation CC 733.1(1)

The accused was held in custody and will appear in the Ontario Court of Justice in Bracebridge for a bail hearing.
