Back up your photos and videos, Google is canceling a popular free storage service

Google is updating its Photos’ storage policy

Tech giant Google has announced it's canceling one of its most popular free services. Google says it will stop offering their free storage model within Google photos on June 1, 2021.

Instead, Google says any new photos and videos you upload will count toward the free 15 GB of storage that comes with every Google Account or the additional storage you’ve purchased as a Google One member.

The good news for current users is that any photos or videos you’ve uploaded in high quality before June 1st, will not count toward your 15GB of free storage.

Existing photos and videos are exempt from this change

This means that photos and videos backed up before June 1, 2021 will still be considered free and exempt from the storage limit. You can verify your backup quality at any time in the Photos app by going to back up & sync in settings. Pixel 1-5 users will be exempt from the changes.

The popular service is used by over a billion people, with 28 billion new photos and videos uploaded to the service every week.
