Bone-chilling cold is expected through the weekend, which is tough enough on anyone who has to step outdoors, and it can be dangerous for those who are homeless, with the risk of frostbite and hypothermia.
According to Environment Canada, Saturday appears to be the coldest day of the weekend with a high around minus 13 and a wind chill around minus 25. There will be a bit of moderation on Sunday with a high of minus 9.
The County of Simcoe, which is responsible for shelter services in the region, has advised warming centre operators they need to prepare to be activated from Friday until Monday, Dec. 23, including a new warming centre at 445 Blake Street in east end Barrie, in the area of Steel Street and Penetanguishene Road. The maximum capacity in the Blake Street warming centre is 20 individuals.
The County purchased the former Coates Fine Cars property for $6 million. Modular units will be relocated to the property as part of the Barrie Supportive Rapid Re-Housing Program (SRRP) for homeless seniors aged 55 and up. The County has said the property will also be home to other future social service programs but has not disclosed details.
Additionally, the County will be activating warming centre locations, outreach services, and
enhancing the Motel Voucher Program from December 20-23, inclusive. The Motel Voucher
Program will be expanded to include any individual that is unable to access shelter spaces or
warming centres from December 20-23, inclusive, and transportation to available spaces will be
available through Community Connection. Referrals to the Motel Voucher Program’s Winter
Warming intake can be done by calling 2-1-1 (press 1 for Housing Navigator) or by emailing
Community Connection at winterwarming@communityconnection.ca.
"Warming centre services create more opportunities for individuals living unhouse to come indoors when they are most at risk. While at county-funded warming centres, individuals can access support to find shelter, housing, and other services and supports," the County said in a news release.
