A 49-year-old man from Brampton was killed in a multi-vehicle crash on Highway 11 in Orillia.

According to provincial police, 11 others were transported to a local hospital with various injuries.

Police say they were alerted about the collision shortly after 9 a.m. on Friday.

There was heavy snow at the time of the collision.

Police established a warming centre at Rotary Place in Orillia for those involved in the crash.

Snow squalls battered the Orillia and Midland-areas for most of Friday, though Environment Canada ended the snow squall warning for those locations late in the afternoon.

During the height of the squalls and strong wind, Orillia OPP and Southern Georgian Bay OPP advised the public against unnecessary travel.

As a result of the crash, Highway 11 northbound was closed from Highway 400 to Coldwater Road in Orillia, and the southbound lanes of Highway 11 were closed from Washago to Line 15 in Oro-Medonte.

Lakehead University in Orillia closed its campus at noon, and the City of Orillia closed its facilities at 2 p.m. including the City Centre due to the severe weather. The Orillia Public Library also closed its doors.
