When is Mother's Day this year
Mother's Day always falls on the second Sunday in May. That means that in 2025, Mother's Day is on May 11.
A quick look at Mother’s Day: History & meaning
Mother’s Day has a rich history, and its origins might surprise you. While many people associate the holiday with flowers, brunches, and commercialized gifts, it wasn’t always this way.
The holiday’s roots go back to the early 20th century. It was Anna Jarvis, an activist from West Virginia, who campaigned for a national day to honor mothers.
After losing her own mother in 1905, she wanted to find a way to recognize the sacrifices mothers made. She worked tirelessly to have Mother's Day recognized as a national holiday. Finally, in 1914, President Woodrow Wilson declared it official.
But what Anna Jarvis envisioned wasn’t the Mother’s Day we know today. She wanted a heartfelt celebration. It was meant to be a day for children to honor their mothers with personal, sincere gestures of love, rather than a commercialized event.
In fact, Jarvis became frustrated with how quickly the holiday turned into a marketing tool. She even tried to reverse the commercialization, but by then, it was too late. Cards, flowers, and gifts were now the centerpiece of the holiday.
Despite the shift, the core idea of the holiday – celebrating the hard work and love of mothers – remains the same. And, in recent years, there’s been a growing movement to return the holiday to its original, more thoughtful roots.

A deeper look: Rethinking & refocusing Mother’s Day

While gifts and celebrations are wonderful, some experts say it’s time to revisit what Mother’s Day really stands for. Sociologist Sarita Srivastava argues that the holiday should return to its activist roots—focusing on peace, justice, and inclusivity, rather than just consumerism. It’s a powerful reminder that honoring moms can also mean advocating for broader social change.
